Nickel Asia Implemented its VSAT Network

E-mail Print

Nickel Asia Corporation implemented its corporate VSAT satellite network with the help of NewGen IT Corporation. Nickel Asia is the largest nickel mining company in the Philippines today.  It owns majority share of six mining operations throughout the Philippines.  The company also controls a 10% equity interest in the Coral Bay HPAL facility at Rio Tuba, Palawan.

The project is actually an expansion of an exisiting VSAT satellite network of one of its subsidiaries, Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corp.  NewGen IT was again selected as the lead project implementor because of the company's successful implementation of Rio Tuba's network.  The expansion calls for the upgrade of the VSAT satellite hub facilities in Nickel Asia's head office in Makati and the installation of remote stations in the following mine sites:

  • Cagdianao, Dinagat Islands
  • Taganito, Surigao del Norte
  • Taganaan, Surigao del Norte

To accommodate the additional remote VSAT stations, NewGen IT upgraded the satellite equipment and provisions in the main hub station and the bandwidth upgraded to accommodate the additional network traffic in the remote the remote sites.  Increasing the bandwidth in the main hub station necessitates the replacement of the block up converter (BUC) installed.  The BUC is an active component connected to the VSAT antenna that is used in the transmission of satellite signals.

NewGen IT used a Cisco 7206 VXR router to act as the networks bandwidth manager.  The Cisco 7200 VXR router series provides integrated functions previously performed by separate devices into a single platform.  The equipment supports high-density LAN and WAN interfaces, broadband subscriber services aggregation, enterprise WAN aggregation andhost of other features necessary for network routing and bandwidth management.

The project was completed in December 2007 and is now fully operational.
